Collect Donations in Your Building

Property managers:

Are you tired of the mess and expensive trash hauling bills during move-out?

West Campus residents:

Are you discouraged by the sight of your building’s dumpster overflowing with perfectly good, reusable items?

There’s a better way!

Three MoveOutATX reuse partners are willing to set up donation collection containers in building lobbies.

All you have to do is contact us — or urge your property manager to do so.

In general, items that can be accepted in interior collection containers are those accepted at a thrift store: clothing, bedding/linens, electronics, small appliances, kitchenwares, home decor, etc. Furniture is generally not accepted due to size constraints.

What to do:

  • Contact the MoveOutATX staff and let us know you’re interested in collecting donations at your property. We’ll give you contact information for our participating reuse partners.

  • Contact the organization of your choice. Tell them you heard about them through MoveOutATX.

  • Schedule dates for in-property collection. Consider when you anticipate the highest volume of residents moving out.

  • Ask the organization to bring you signage indicating accepted items when they drop off the collection containers.

  • Promote the donation drive to tenants. Make sure to include the end date.

  • When bins are full, contact the org to swap them out.

  • Request the org keeps track of weights.

  • Just in case, track the number of filled containers yourself and take pictures.

Sample Promotional Copy:

“We’re working with [ORG] to collect donations during move-out season. Between [DATE] and [DATE], bring gently used items you don’t plan to take with you when you move to [LOCATION]. No large furniture, please.”

“Moving out? Help your unwanted stuff find a new home! Between [DATE] and [DATE], bring gently used items you don’t plan to take with you when you move to [LOCATION]. No large furniture, please.”

Case Study

We tested in-lobby collection of donations with the GrandMarc apartment building in 2017. They reduced their trash service by 33% during move-out, collected 15,000 pounds of donations and cardboard for recycling, and saved more than $1,000 in hauling fees!

Collecting material for donation during move out is so easy! We’ll definitely keep the program for future move out periods.
